With the announcement of the First Rudd Ministry and the election of an unexpected Liberal Party leadership team, both of which occurred this afternoon, there can be no doubt that Australia, in the space of just a few days, has acquired a new generation of politicians and has opened an exciting chapter in its national story.
If any Australian citizen harboured any doubts that the country has changed direction, these would have been put away by today's sealer - after years of the Coalition refusing endorse the Kyoto Treaty, the newly elected Liberal Party leader Dr Brendan Nelson made this his first policy announcement. His deputy is the Western Australian, Julie Bishop.
While this was going on, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was announcing his first Ministry. There's a lot of youth, enough experience and Australia's first woman Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. The 17-member Cabinet contains four women, including Penny Wong and Nicola Roxon who are young enough to entertain notions of one day being the country's first woman leader.
Julia Gillard herself has been given a 'superministry' of education, employment and workplace relations - welding into place responsibilities that, effectively integrated, will deliver to Australia the skills it desperately requires to maintain its current growth trajectory. Julia has the most critical economic role in the new government.
Kevin Rudd has shown great insight and professionalism in allocating responsibilities among the team at his disposal. Australians have done well out of last Saturday's national election. Less than a week later, the Howard era already seems far distant.
