SANDRA TANG
I learned this morning of the death of Dave Burnett, through a number of hurried emails and messages from friends. I had only met him on a few occasions but he was well known to many of my friends and considered a rising star in Australia's Young Labor movement. Between his work in the Jewish community, Young Labor and his active involvement on Sydney Uni campus, he was well regarded and liked by the many who knew him.
This from Sam Dastyari, ALP state organiser and former president of NSW Young Labor:
"David worked tirelessly to promote social justice, tolerance and inter-community harmony, particularly on university campuses during his time as Australasian Union of Jewish Students president."
News of a loss like this spreads quickly. News outlets at home and abroad have covered Dave's death and a tribute group has been set up on Facebook. This is a sad loss, not only for his family and all who knew him, but also for Australia.
